Miss Mexico Jimena Navarrete Wins Miss Universe 2010

2009 Miss Universe Stefania Fernandez has crowned her successor as 22-year-old Jimena comes out triumphant at the event taking place at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

84 beautiful ladies have gathered at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas on Monday night, August 23 to battle for the crown of 2010 Miss Universe. While five lined up for the coveted title after swimsuit and evening gown competitions, it was Miss Mexico Jimena Navarrete that came out as the successor of 2009 winner Stefania Fernandez in the end.

22-year-old Jimena will receive an undisclosed salary, use of a luxury apartment in New York with living expenses paid, a diamond-encrusted crown and jewelry fit for a queen, and a one-year scholarship to the New York Film Academy among others. She will also spend her year as Miss Universe touring the world to call attention to the issues of HIV/AIDS and breast cancer.

In the top 5, she faced a stiff competitions from 24-year-old Miss Jamaica Yendi Phillipps, 19-year-old Miss Australia Jesinta Campbell, 23-year-old Miss Ukraine Anna Poslavska and 22-year-old Miss Philippines Venus Raj who finished second to fifth in respective order. Should she be unable to perform her duties, first runner-up Miss Jamaica will assume her duties.

Jimena wasn't the only one walking away with an extra title on the special night. Miss Australia was hailed Miss Congeniality, while Miss Thailand Fonthip Watcharatrakul was given the title of Miss Photogenic in addition of winning Best National Costume.

The 59th annual Miss Universe was hosted by Poison star Bret Michaels and NBC correspondent Natalie Morales. The event was made merry with the performance from R&B; star John Legend. The panel of judges on the special night included Criss Angel, Evan Lysacek, Chynna Phillips and Jane Seymour.
